Berlin In Leading Position In International Stem Cell Engineering
6. Juni 2013
The recently published Global Assessment Stem Cell Engineering Report highlights Berlin-Brandenburg Center for Regenerative Therapies (BCRT) as a translational showcase center. The report, which was conducted by the World Technology Evaluation Center (WTEC), singles out BCRT for two features. First, the report points out the opportunity analysis made be BCRT's business development unit. In contrast to other institutes, at BCRT the opportunity check is conducted very early in the development of a specific research project. Second, distinguished biologists and clinicians work closely together with first rate engineers thus making BCRT a truly multidisciplinary research center. Especially the strong groups in engineering and biomaterials - unusual for a clinically dominated research center - impressed the WTEC attendees. The study aims to assess the current status and the trends of stem cell engineering, and compare U.S. research and development programs with those abroad. In addition to the National Science Foundation (NSF), the study was co-sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
